The CRAIC 42 - The New Home of Games in Galway
The CRAIC 42 - The New Home of Games in Galway with Pulse College
By Avril Horan
As the home of the creative arts in Ireland, Galway should also be at the very heart of the gaming industry in the country, according to Chris Colston, lecturer at Pulse College Galway.
“Galway is the artistic capital of Ireland, the home of film, music and culture, and game development and design is a creative endeavour," explains Chris.
"There is no reason why Galway should not be at the heart of gaming and become renowned for game development in the future. Galway has a fantastic reputation in the film and music industries, and we need the same for the games scene. Similar to the film industry, where the process is both creative and technical, there is a 50/50 split in game development between the creative design process and the geeky technical side!”
Video game design and development is a creative and interactive media and Pulse College, located at 1st Floor, Geata na Cathracha, Fairgreen Road provides a range of full and part-time courses and also a six week introduction course. Their next six-week introductory course begins on February 24th (with another starting on June 20th) and it is the perfect way to discover if game development is for you.
“It’s perfect for game design newbies who want to explore the industry,” Chris continues.
“People with no experience and no exposure to games development can come along and learn from the ground up. All you need to know is how to use a computer. By the end of the six weeks, you will have made a game and found out if it is the right fit for you. It is also suitable for people who are on the fence about games development.
Pulse College is unique in that all of their lecturers are also working in the industry. Many travel from across Ireland to share their knowledge with students at the modern city centre campus. They are hosting an Open Day on March 11th at 6:30pm at their Fairgreen premises, providing an opportunity to meet the lecturers in person, and ask questions about their upcoming courses.
Their programmes offer students the ability to gain hands-on understanding of video games design and development processes. Students will be introduced to the various facets of video game development- design, art, programming, production, management and marketing- through a variety of individual and team projects, all taught and delivered by practicing industry professionals.
